Lîla Ensemble formed at the beginning to 2012 and immediately began presenting work at small venues around Toronto. We had our official group launch in April 2012 with a sold out show which received very encouraging reviews for its originality and accessibility.
In June 2012, after much planning and development, we embarked on a 20 day tour in Europe, consisting of over 13 engagements in Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Croatia, Austria and Slovakia. Along with our performances, we also worked with a number of local artists and facilitated a workshop on improvised music and dance.
Upon returning to Toronto, we continued to develop our core work around improvisation and music/movement relationships. We also began a foray into site specific work. Beginning Feb 2013 we found a home as residents of the well-established monthly duet series, 'Coexisdance'. In March of 2013 we produced our second large show called "Celestial Play", which was part performance part arts party!
In June of 2013 we embarked on another tour. This time to Eastern Canada! We performed in Montreal and Fredericton and were featured performers at the 2nd annual 1313 Music Festival in Halifax. There we performed alongside many well known Halifax improvisers such as Geordie Haley and Suzanne Chui.
In 2014 we began the year at a short residency at Rue Studio on Manitoulin Island, Ontario where we explored and dug into our core work once again to set ourselves up for our third annual show, Celestial Play 2, which was presented in March 2014. That summer we hosted a workshop for musicians and dancers interested in improvisational collaboration, which concluded with a performance at Toronto's Majlis Art Garden.
Since then, Lîla has taken a break from rehearsing and performing due to several members moving to other parts of the world. Moving into 2017 we are happy to announce that we are back and looking forward to seeing what this new chapter of Lîla's story holds in store for us! Keep an eye out for upcoming performances in February 2017!
